Glossary / Unicorn
What is Unicorn?
In non-monogamous dating, a unicorn is a single person — often, though not always, a bisexual woman — who dates or has intimate experiences with an established couple. The nickname suggests that finding someone attracted to both partners and comfortable with the same arrangement can be rare.
Why is the term unicorn used?
Couples may imagine a third person who is equally attracted to both of them, available on the same terms and willing to fit into an existing relationship. That exact combination is uncommon, which led to the mythical-creature comparison.
Some people use the label playfully for themselves. Others dislike it because it can reduce a whole person to a role. Ask what language each person prefers rather than assuming.
What is unicorn hunting?
Unicorn hunting usually means an established couple searching for a third person under couple-centred rules. It becomes harmful when the new person is expected to date both partners equally, has less influence over decisions, or can be removed by one partner without discussion.
The concern is not three-person dating itself. It is unequal power, hidden expectations and treating the third person as an accessory rather than an autonomous partner.
How can couples approach a third person respectfully?
Be honest that you are a couple and explain what you are seeking without promising a fixed outcome. Make room for separate connections, independent consent and the possibility that feelings develop unevenly.
Discuss privacy, safer sex, time, public acknowledgement and how endings would be handled. A new partner should have a real voice in agreements that affect them and the freedom to say no without pressure from either member of the couple.
Frequently asked questions
Is a unicorn always a woman?
No. The term is often applied to bisexual women dating couples, but people also use it more broadly for a single person joining an established couple.
Is being a unicorn the same as polyamory?
Not always. The connection may be romantic, casual or purely intimate. Polyamory specifically involves the possibility of multiple loving or romantic relationships.
Is unicorn dating unethical?
Not by definition. It can be ethical when everyone has informed consent, equal dignity, meaningful choices and the freedom to set boundaries or leave.
